Duterte arrested for crimes against humanity in The Hague
Former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested and is being flown to The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity. This marks the first time a former leader from the region has been arrested by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Duterte was detained upon arrival in Manila from Hong Kong, following an ICC warrant related to deadly anti-drug operations during his presidency. His daughter criticized the Marcos administration for cooperating with the ICC, while Duterte questioned the legality of his arrest. The ICC has been investigating mass killings linked to Duterte's anti-drug campaign, with estimates of the death toll ranging from 6,000 to 30,000. The court's warrant states that his arrest is necessary to ensure he appears before the court and to protect witnesses.
