Duterte arrested for crimes against humanity in Philippines
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested at Manila International Airport on a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity linked to his anti-drug campaign. This marks a significant development after years of investigation into thousands of killings during his presidency. Duterte's crackdown on drugs, which began in 2016, resulted in a high death toll and drew international condemnation. The ICC's investigation covers incidents from 2011 to 2019, despite Duterte's withdrawal from the Rome Statute in 2019 to avoid accountability. The current Philippine administration, led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., has stated it will cooperate with the ICC if requested. Duterte, now 79 and in poor health, has expressed willingness to face charges while continuing to defend his controversial policies.
