Duterte arrested for crimes against humanity in Philippines
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested at Manila International Airport on a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity linked to his anti-drug campaign. This marks a significant development in an ongoing investigation into thousands of killings during his presidency. Duterte's arrest follows a lengthy ICC investigation into drug-related deaths from 2011 to 2019. The ICC had previously paused its inquiry after Duterte withdrew the Philippines from the Rome Statute, but a ruling in July 2023 allowed the investigation to resume. Despite his arrest, Duterte continues to defend his actions, claiming they were necessary for public safety. He has also registered to run for mayor of Davao in upcoming elections, indicating a potential return to politics.
