Duterte arrested for crimes against humanity in Philippines
Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested following an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for crimes against humanity related to his drug war. The warrant was executed upon his arrival in Manila on March 11. This development marks a shift in President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s stance, as his administration now cooperates with the ICC after previously dismissing its authority. Tensions between Duterte and Marcos escalated after the impeachment of Duterte's daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte. The ICC continues to assert jurisdiction over crimes committed during Duterte's presidency, despite the Philippines withdrawing from the Rome Statute in 2019. The ICC's investigation focuses on killings during Duterte's anti-drug campaign from 2016 to 2019.
