Duterte arrested for crimes against humanity in Manila
Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested in Manila on Tuesday under an International Criminal Court warrant for crimes against humanity related to his controversial war on drugs. The ICC alleges he is responsible for thousands of extrajudicial killings. Duterte's arrest follows a formal inquiry by the ICC that resumed in July 2023, despite the Philippines' withdrawal from the court in 2019. The Philippine government has previously stated it would not cooperate with the investigation. Duterte remains a popular figure in the Philippines and is running for mayor of Davao in the upcoming mid-term elections. His legal team has called the arrest unlawful, while some rights groups view it as a significant step toward accountability.
