Duterte arrested for anti-drug campaign deaths in Philippines
Rodrigo Duterte, the former president of the Philippines, was arrested by Interpol at Manila International Airport on Tuesday. He faces accusations of crimes against humanity linked to his controversial anti-drug campaign, which resulted in thousands of deaths. Duterte's arrest follows an investigation by the International Criminal Court into his anti-drug operations from 2011 to 2019. The ICC previously ruled that its investigation could resume despite Duterte's attempts to suspend it by withdrawing from the Rome Statute. Duterte's anti-drug campaign, which began in 2016, has been criticized for extrajudicial killings. While the Philippine government reported around 6,000 deaths, human rights groups estimate the number could be as high as 20,000.
