Duterte arrested by ICC for drug campaign murders
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was taken into custody by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on March 12 for his controversial war on drugs. He will appear before an ICC judge soon to face murder charges. A former ICC judge stated that there is no immunity for heads of state regarding their actions. Duterte's lawyers are expected to challenge the ICC's jurisdiction during the upcoming confirmation of charges. Duterte's drug campaign, which lasted from 2016 to 2022, resulted in thousands of deaths. Although the Philippines withdrew from the ICC in 2019, the court retains jurisdiction over crimes committed while the country was a member.
