Duterte arrested at Manila airport under ICC warrant

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested at Manila airport on Tuesday under an Interpol warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC). The warrant relates to his controversial "war on drugs" during his presidency. The ICC is investigating killings linked to Duterte's crackdown on illegal drugs from 2011 to 2019, which may constitute crimes against humanity. Duterte had previously withdrawn the Philippines from the Rome Statute and attempted to halt the ICC's investigation. Current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has chosen not to rejoin the ICC but stated that his government would cooperate with the ICC if requested to detain Duterte.
