DR Congo and Rwanda leaders hold emergency talks as M23 rebels near Goma takeover
DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi will meet Rwandan leader Paul Kagame for an emergency summit on Wednesday. This comes as M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwandan troops, appear close to taking control of Goma, a key city in eastern Congo. M23 has already seized Goma's airport amid intense fighting, which has resulted in over 100 deaths and nearly 1,000 injuries. The situation remains unclear regarding the control of the city, with reports indicating that Congolese forces have suffered significant losses. The conflict has led to a humanitarian crisis, with the UN warning of mass displacements, food shortages, and overwhelmed hospitals. More than 1,200 Congolese soldiers have reportedly surrendered and are now confined at a UN base.
