DGPI criticizes removal of documentary from Philippine festival

The Directors’ Guild of the Philippines Inc. (DGPI) is unhappy about the removal of the documentary “Food Delivery: Fresh from the West Philippine Sea” from the CinePanalo Film Festival. The documentary was directed by Baby Ruth Villarama and had been set to premiere just two days before its scheduled date. The DGPI believes the decision to pull the film is a worrying sign of censorship in the Philippines. The documentary highlights the difficulties faced by Filipino fishermen because of the Chinese Coast Guard in disputed waters. The DGPI stated this move goes against the values of artistic expression and seems to bow to powerful foreign interests. The organization noted this is not an isolated incident. Other films, like “Alipato at Muog” and “Lost Sabungeros,” have faced similar issues, being given X-ratings or removed from cinemas. The DGPI called this an attack on freedom of expression, warning that such actions encourage intimidation and silence important stories. In their statement, the DGPI urged the community to support filmmakers and their right to tell important stories. They emphasized that cinema plays a crucial role in revealing truths that some would prefer to keep hidden. The DGPI stands with Villarama and other filmmakers who challenge uncomfortable realities and called for the protection of democratic rights. The decision to withdraw the documentary was announced on March 12. CinePanalo director Chris Cahilig mentioned “external factors” led to this outcome. Despite this setback, he expressed hope that the film may find a place at international festivals. The 2025 CinePanalo Film Festival is currently ongoing until March 25 in Quezon City.
