Developer removes AI voices from Future? No Thanks! and offers refunds to upset players
The developer of the open-world ecosatire game *Future? No Thanks!* has removed AI-generated voices from the game and is offering refunds to players who feel "betrayed" by the belated disclosure of the technology's use. Lead developer Paolo Pedercini removed two instances of text-to-speech voicework for in-game robot characters after facing backlash on social media and in press coverage. He stated the game is "0.001% worse" without the voices, which he had used as a spoof of generative AI. Pedercini criticized the reaction to his disclosure, comparing the anger to Gamergate harassment, and noted that many developers likely use AI for coding without disclosing it. He also adjusted in-game quest rewards to prevent soft-locking and plans for his next game to be "completely hand-coded."
