On March 24, Stevens County deputies shot and killed a man during a standoff near Northport, Washington. The deputies were trying to arrest the man based on a felony warrant in the 3300 block of state Route 25. The man came out of a house with a gun on his hip and did not follow commands to surrender. A crisis negotiator was brought in, but the man fled on foot. Deputies continued to call for him to stop and used a nonlethal pepper ball to try to de-escalate the situation. When the man drew his firearm, deputies responded with lethal force. They provided immediate medical aid and transported him to a local hospital, where he died shortly after. The Washington State Patrol's Criminal Investigation Division will handle the investigation into the incident.
