December skies feature the Pleiades star cluster and the Cold Moon
In December, the Pleiades star cluster, also known as the Seven Sisters, will be visible starting December 2. This cluster has been observed for thousands of years and is located in the Taurus constellation. The Geminid meteor shower peaks on December 13, but bright moonlight from the full Cold Moon on December 15 may hinder visibility. The Cold Moon, named for the cold winter air, will be at its brightest early in the morning. The Ursid meteor shower will follow, peaking on December 22 and 23. This shower is less intense than the Geminids, with about five to ten meteors visible per hour under clear skies.
