Dash 8 and ATR 42/72 turboprops compared in regional flight roles
The ATR 72 and Dash 8 are popular turboprop aircraft used for regional flights. The ATR 72 has a maximum range of 950 miles and typically seats 72 to 78 passengers. In contrast, the Dash 8 Q400 can fly up to 1,300 miles and accommodates 68 to 90 passengers. The ATR 72 is more fuel-efficient, using less horsepower than the Dash 8, which can lead to higher operational costs for airlines using the latter. Both aircraft have similar cabin layouts, but the ATR is quieter due to modern engine technology. While both aircraft serve important roles in connecting smaller communities to larger hubs, the Dash 8 is more commonly used in Europe, whereas turboprops have not gained significant popularity in the U.S. market.
