A study of nearly 500,000 people has found that smoking shortens the telomeres, or end fragments, of chromosomes in white blood cells. Telomere length is an indicator of aging and the ability of cells to repair and regenerate. The study also found that quitting smoking can significantly decrease the risk of accelerated aging.
