Costume designer creates modern detective look for "The Residence."

Costume designer Lyn Paolo has put her creativity to the test in the new Netflix series "The Residence." She describes the project as a "jigsaw puzzle" due to the unique setting of the White House during a state dinner. Uzo Aduba stars as Cordelia Cupp, a detective tasked with solving a murder amid the chaos. Paolo aimed to blend a classic detective look with a modern twist, highlighting Cordelia's quirky personality through her attire while ensuring she stood out among the formal staff and guests. Paolo experimented with many outfits for Aduba, ultimately choosing a British field jacket and bird-themed clothing to reflect Cordelia's interests. Comfort was crucial, as Cordelia is active in the investigation. To complement Aduba, Randall Park's FBI agent Edwin Park wears a striking teal suit. The show features a diverse cast attending the White House event, each crafted with unique outfits. Paolo faced challenges in costume changes after a setting revamp during the story, enhancing the visual storytelling of the series. Pop star Kylie Minogue guest stars, showcasing a look suitable for both a guest and performer.
