Costa Rica violated rights of deported children, lawsuit claims
A human rights group is suing Costa Rica, alleging the nation violated the rights of 81 children deported from the U.S. by detaining them in a rural camp. The lawsuit claims violations of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The children, part of a larger group of migrants from Asian countries, were deported by the Trump administration in February. They were held in a former factory building for nearly two months without legal status, education, or mental health services. The lawsuit follows similar actions against Panama, and concerns over the U.S. exporting its deportation process. The Costa Rican government has offered options, but many fear leaving the detention facility.
