Coroner calls for review of injection guidelines after pensioner's death in UK
A 77-year-old woman, Patricia Lines, died after receiving a Vitamin B12 injection. The coroner's court found that bacteria from her skin likely caused a severe infection, worsened by the injection. The nurse did not clean the injection site, following national guidelines that state cleaning is unnecessary if the skin appears clean. The coroner has now urged nurses to use "common sense" and clean the skin before injections. In a report, the coroner highlighted that alcohol wipes are a low-cost way to reduce infection risk. She has called for a review of current guidelines and expects a response from health authorities by December 20.
