Construction worker killed in crash on 91 Freeway

Family members are grieving the loss of Jose Mantecon, a 45-year-old father killed in a work-related crash on a freeway in Buena Park, California. Jose was a caring family man who enjoyed including his loved ones in his activities like surfing and dirt biking. Just a day before the accident, he was set to take his family on a dirt bike trip. The California Highway Patrol reported the accident occurred on March 21. A pickup truck struck Jose while he was working as a subcontractor for Caltrans. The 22-year-old driver of the truck was unharmed and remained at the scene. No charges have been filed. Jose met his wife, Carla, while they both worked at Bank of America. They married in 2012 and built a life together, raising their two children, Maddie and Logan. Family members remember him for being generous and making those around him feel welcome. Carla described him as kind and never judgmental. Jose began his career in construction about nine years ago and often worked night shifts. Carla emphasized the need for drivers to be vigilant in construction zones to protect workers. A fundraiser set up to support Carla and the children has raised over $62,000 as of Tuesday evening.
