Congo's North-Kivu governor dies from injuries in rebel fighting as M23 advances on Goma
The governor of North-Kivu province in eastern Congo, Maj. Gen. Peter Cirimwami, has died from injuries sustained during fighting with M23 rebels. His death occurred as the rebels advanced towards Goma, the provincial capital. M23 has made significant territorial gains, recently capturing towns near Goma, which is home to about 2 million people. Panic has spread in Goma as the rebels encircle the city, threatening government control. The conflict in eastern Congo involves numerous armed groups, with M23 accused of receiving support from Rwanda. Rwanda denies these claims but has acknowledged its military presence in the region.
