The Because They’re Funny (BTF) Comedy Festival is set to return to Washington, DC, from October 10 to 12 this year. This will be the festival's third edition. The festival highlights BIPOC comedians and aims to give them a platform in the comedy scene. Submissions for the Breakout Comedian of the Year competition are now open. The deadline for entries is May 31. The winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize. Since the festival started in 2023, over 1,000 comedians have entered the contest, and attendance has surpassed 9,000 people. The festival is produced by NICE CROWD, a company that also organizes the American Black Film Festival. Jeff Friday, co-founder of NICE CROWD, noted a growing momentum behind the event. Past headliners include former SNL star Leslie Jones and Black-ish actor Deon Cole. Last year's winners, Flo Hernandez and Alfred Kainga, have since launched successful careers in comedy. In addition to the competition, the festival will offer various events, including performances, industry panels, master classes, and networking opportunities. Events DC, the local authority for convention and entertainment, is partnering with NICE CROWD for this year’s festival.
