Colorectal cancer increases heart disease death risk significantly

A new study shows that people diagnosed with colorectal cancer have a higher risk of dying from heart disease, especially in the first two years after their diagnosis. The research indicates that these individuals are 16 percent more likely to die from heart issues compared to those without colorectal cancer. The findings will be presented at the American College of Cardiology's Annual Scientific Session in Chicago. The study analyzed data from over 630,000 patients, focusing on various heart-related complications that could arise from cancer treatment. The analysis revealed that the risk was 45 percent greater of dying from heart problems during the first two years after diagnosis. Treatment options such as chemotherapy and surgery may contribute to this increased risk, affecting heart health, according to Dr. Robert S. Copeland-Halperin, a cardiologist not involved in the study. Younger adults under 50 with colorectal cancer faced even higher risks, being 2.4 times more likely to die from heart-related causes compared to their peers without cancer. Researchers are unsure why this age group is more affected, but aggressive cancer treatments might play a role. The study also found significant disparities among different racial groups. Black adults with colorectal cancer had a 74 percent higher risk of heart-related death, reflecting broader trends in heart disease prevalence in Black communities. Meanwhile, men with colorectal cancer had a 55 percent higher risk. Doctors recommend that patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer focus on controlling heart disease risk factors. Suggestions include managing cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes, as well as adopting healthier lifestyles through diet, exercise, and quitting smoking. Addressing these factors could significantly improve overall health outcomes for patients during and after cancer treatment.
