Clashes in Syria result in over 70 deaths
Clashes in Latakia, Syria, have resulted in over 70 deaths and many injuries. The violence erupted when pro-Assad fighters attacked security checkpoints, leading to helicopter strikes by government forces. This is the most intense fighting since Assad's ouster in December. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the dead include 16 security personnel and 28 pro-Assad fighters. The conflict began as security forces targeted loyalists regrouping in the region, particularly linked to former commander Suhail al-Hassan. Security forces are now deployed in Jableh to restore order. Alawite community leaders have accused the government of targeting peaceful protesters during the helicopter strikes. Reinforcements have been sent to control the situation following the recent unrest.
