Clashes in Syria leave over 70 dead
Fierce fighting in north-west Syria has resulted in over 70 deaths, including security personnel and pro-Assad militants. The clashes, described as the most violent since Bashar al-Assad's ousting in December, occurred in Jableh and surrounding areas. Security forces reported a well-planned attack by pro-Assad fighters, leading to significant casualties. In a related development, authorities arrested General Ibrahim Huweija, a former head of air force intelligence, accused of numerous assassinations during Assad's rule. In response to the violence, security forces imposed curfews in Alawite-populated areas and deployed military reinforcements. Tensions escalated after residents resisted an arrest related to arms trading, prompting further clashes and protests.
