Clashes in Latakia province leave dozens dead
Syrian forces loyal to the new government are fighting remnants of the ousted Assad regime in Latakia province. Dozens have reportedly been killed in clashes near a Russian-controlled airbase, prompting a curfew until Friday morning. Heavy fighting has also been reported in Homs and Aleppo. Estimates of casualties vary, with reports of around 70 former regime fighters killed and over 25 captured. A defense ministry spokesman warned Assad loyalists to surrender or face consequences. The situation poses a significant security challenge for interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa, who is also dealing with resistance from Druze forces in the south. The new government has pledged to destroy any remaining chemical weapons stockpiles from the Assad era.
