Cincinnati mother and daughter killed in Georgia crash
A mother and her teenage daughter were killed in a car crash while traveling to Florida for spring break. The accident happened on Saturday morning on Interstate 75 in Byron, Georgia. The victims are identified as Mattie Newman, 17, and her mother, Melissa Darby, 48, both from Cincinnati. Mattie's father, Mathew Newman, was seriously injured and is in critical condition at a hospital. Reports say the crash occurred around 7:45 a.m. The vehicle hit a guardrail and overturned. Neither Mattie nor Melissa was wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Mattie was pronounced dead at the scene, while Melissa passed away at a hospital. Mattie was a dedicated student at Riverside East Academy, where she was known for her academic achievements and was a member of the varsity volleyball team. The principal of her school expressed sorrow over the loss, highlighting Mattie's standing as a top student and her recent high ACT scores.
