CICC warns of generative AI risks in Manila

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has issued a warning about the risks of generative artificial intelligence. At the GovX.0 Summit in Pasay City, Robert Sanchez Paguia, the CICC Data Protection Officer, described this technology as a double-edged sword. Paguia explained that generative AI differs from traditional AI. While traditional AI focuses on analyzing data, generative AI creates new content based on the data it learns from. This capability can be dangerous in the wrong hands. Cybercriminals could potentially use generative AI to alter information, carry out cyberattacks, and commit fraud. The use of generative AI could also affect the 2025 elections, Paguia warned. He expressed concerns that it might be manipulated to influence the electoral process. However, generative AI can be beneficial in cybersecurity. The CICC is already using it for threat simulations and training to better prepare their security teams against cyber threats. Paguia urged the public to report any cybercrimes to the CICC Inter-Agency Response Center by calling hotline 1326.
