Christian Democrats win Germany's election as AfD gains ground
Friedrich Merz has led the Christian Democrats to victory in Germany's national election, securing 28.6 percent of the vote. He will negotiate with Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats to form a coalition government. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) gained significant support, receiving 20.8 percent of the vote, making it the second-largest party. The Left parties also saw a revival, garnering 8.6 percent. The Social Democrats recorded their worst result at 16.4 percent, and Chancellor Scholz will not continue in government. The Greens also lost support, facing challenges from high energy prices.
