Chinese video game Black Myth: Wukong gains global acclaim with animated finale

The Chinese video game Black Myth: Wukong, inspired by the classic novel Journey to the West, has gained global popularity since its August release. The game's animated finale, titled Unfinished, has particularly resonated with international audiences. Director Yang Tingmu attributes the game's success to its unique animation style, which blends traditional Chinese art with modern techniques. His team created a new animation method based on lianhuanhua, a form of palm-sized comic books, which has not been animated before. Despite the acclaim, Yang noted that expanding Unfinished into a full-length film would require significantly more resources and skilled personnel. The current team of about 70 took six months to complete the short film, highlighting the challenges of scaling up their innovative techniques.
