Charles Wharton charged with murdering child in Hamilton
Charles Wharton has been charged with the murder of 8-year-old Zahquiel Taipeti in Hamilton, New Zealand. Wharton lifted his name suppression, allowing the media to identify him. The attack, which also injured Zahquiel's father and another man, occurred in 2024. The incident happened while Zahquiel and his family were recovering from a tangi, a traditional Māori funeral. The boy was sleeping when Wharton attacked, also injuring Zahquiel's father, Mitikiro Woods, and a nearby resident. Both survived their injuries. Local residents had reported Wharton for suspicious behavior before the attack. He had been trespassing in the neighborhood. After his arrest in September 2024, he was kept anonymous as part of legal procedures. Zahquiel’s family is focused on obtaining justice for him. Wharton is set to appear in court in May 2025. The upcoming trial is expected to last two weeks.
