In March 2022, a senior software engineer in Singapore received a fake job offer, leading to North Korean hackers stealing $600 million in cryptocurrency from Sky Mavis. Due to strict sanctions, North Korea turned to illegal activities, including coal and oil trading, smuggling, and cybercrime. In 2022, North Korea's hacking gang was responsible for half of all cryptocurrency theft, totaling $1.65 billion, surpassing their income from all other exports.
