Ceasefire deadline approaches; negotiations yet to begin

The ceasefire in Gaza, which paused 15 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas, is set to end on Saturday. Negotiations for a second phase, involving the release of remaining hostages and a lasting ceasefire, have not yet begun. Hamas has released all 25 living hostages from the first phase and is expected to turn over more remains soon. Israel is seeking an extension of the ceasefire to secure the release of additional captives, but Egypt has refused to discuss this until Phase 2 negotiations start. The first phase has heightened mistrust between both sides, with accusations of violations and harsh treatment of hostages. Israel has also intensified military operations in the West Bank, displacing thousands of Palestinians.
