CDC updates HIV postexposure prophylaxis guidelines in the U.S
New guidelines for nonoccupational postexposure prophylaxis (nPEP) for HIV have been released, updating previous recommendations. These guidelines provide updated regimens and considerations for those exposed to HIV. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published the updated nPEP guidelines on May 8th. The preferred regimens for adults and adolescents include specific combinations of antiretroviral drugs, tailored to individual circumstances. The updated guidelines also emphasize the importance of medical follow-up and the potential use of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for ongoing risk. Increased awareness of nPEP among both providers and the community is also recommended.
