A Calgary police officer was injured on Friday night when their patrol car was hit by an alleged drunk driver. The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. on Stoney Trail S.E. while the officer was conducting a traffic stop. The police vehicle, with its emergency lights on, was parked on the right shoulder when it was rear-ended by a 2015 Dodge Caravan. The crash caused significant damage to the cruiser, and the officer had to be removed from the vehicle. They were later taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The impact pushed the police cruiser forward, causing it to collide with the vehicle that was originally pulled over. Fortunately, the driver of that vehicle was not hurt. The driver of the Dodge Caravan was arrested at the scene, and police confirmed they also were not injured. Calgary Police Chief Mark Neufeld highlighted the dangers of traffic enforcement for officers and all road users on busy highways. Nolan Taylor Watt, 37, has been charged with several offenses, including impaired driving. He is set to appear in court on May 6.
