Calcutta High Court summons lawyers for courtroom disruption

The Calcutta High Court has summoned six lawyers from Basirhat for allegedly disrupting court proceedings. They are expected to appear before the court on Thursday under the Contempt of Courts Act. Justices Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi are overseeing the case. They instructed the Superintendent of Police in Basirhat to present the lawyers at 10:30 AM on Friday. The lawyers are accused of taking undertrial defendants from the courtroom by causing a disturbance. Justice Basak expressed anger at the lawyers, saying their actions were unacceptable. He indicated that serious consequences were necessary, mentioning the potential for lifetime disbarment by the Bar Council. The lawyers’ defense attorney asked the court to consider a less severe penalty. However, Justice Basak dismissed this request, stating that the rights of the victims must be considered. He emphasized the negative impact the lawyers' actions have on the reputation of other legal professionals.
