Calcutta High Court demands report on Suvendu attack
The Calcutta High Court has ordered the state government to provide a report by Friday at 4:30 PM. This report is about an alleged attack on the cars of Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the state, and Shankar Ghosh, a Siliguri MLA. The incident took place in Baruipur last week. During a peaceful rally authorized by police on March 19, a large crowd reportedly attacked the vehicles. Bansuri Swaraj, the lawyer for the petitioners, claimed about 800 individuals acted violently while police were present. She alleged that there was collusion between the state, police, and these individuals. In response, senior state counsel Sirsanya Bandyopadhyay stated that an inquiry by police found no connection between the protesters and those who attacked the cars. Justice Tirthankar Ghosh reviewed various evidence, including a pen drive and medical reports, and insisted that a report be submitted. Additionally, the BJP has filed a second petition seeking permission for a sit-in demonstration outside the Baruipur police station. The original request for the demonstration had been approved by police but later denied. The court granted permission for the protest, adjusting the time to 2 PM to 5 PM with a limit of 1,000 participants. Justice Ghosh also instructed police to ensure proper security, including plainclothes officers and the Rapid Action Force.
