Black cowboys and cowgirls celebrate equestrian traditions at Indiana rodeo
At the Brown Family Ranch's annual rodeo in Gary, Indiana, Black cowboys and cowgirls emphasize the importance of passing down their equestrian traditions. Calvin White, 85, showcased his skills in pole-bending, highlighting a lifelong commitment to horseback riding. The rodeo, which began as a small gathering, has grown into a community event that attracts many riders from the region. Participants, like Tommy O’Penson Jr. and Jack Douglas, stress the significance of teaching younger generations about horsemanship and the values it instills. The Brown Family Ranch also offers educational opportunities, including scholarships for aspiring riders. The event fosters a sense of community and heritage among Black equestrians, who aim to keep their traditions alive for future generations.
