Bidirectional control framework for solar EV charging cuts grid harmonics

nature.com —

Researchers have developed an enhanced control framework for solar-powered electric vehicle charging systems that enables efficient bidirectional energy flow between the grid and vehicles, improving power quality and reducing harmonic distortion. The study introduces an enhanced third order generalized integrator to control the bidirectional voltage source converter, comparing two pulse width modulation methods to optimize performance based on converter losses and harmonics. The system was validated through Simulink simulations and real-time OPAL-RT testing under static and dynamic charging and discharging conditions. Results demonstrate effective power management and lower current harmonic distortion, indicating the proposed configuration offers a reliable and efficient solution for grid-connected solar PV-based EV charging applications. The research addresses the relatively underexplored area of bidirectional power flow in PV-EV integrated charging infrastructure.
