BEST launches monthly star ratings for bus drivers
BEST has announced it will implement a star rating system for its drivers to enhance safety and reduce accidents. This decision comes in response to frequent accidents and protests involving drivers working with wet-lease contracts. The public transport authority, based in Mumbai, plans to evaluate drivers monthly, rewarding those with excellent performance, zero accidents, and good behavior towards passengers. A senior official stated, “This can be motivation for other drivers to perform better.” The star ratings and recognition will be publicized across all depots. In addition to the star ratings, BEST will start acknowledging drivers with the fewest complaints each month. Training sessions for all drivers, including those on wet lease, will also be launched. The details of this new incentive program are still being developed, and it is set to begin in April. BEST has also warned wet-lease operators to address the complaints from their drivers. Many drivers have protested due to low salaries, which range from ₹ 16,000 to ₹ 21,000 per month. This amount is significantly less than what regular BEST drivers earn, and delays in payments are common. Officials stated they would impose fines on operators who fail to improve conditions for drivers. On a recent day, a BEST bus was involved in an accident. A motorcyclist suddenly appeared in front of the bus, causing the driver to brake hard. A scooter behind the bus then collided with it. Fortunately, no one was injured, but officials noted that frequent accidents are concerning.
