Bengaluru's BBMP will use AI for property oversight
Bengaluru's civic body, BBMP, plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor illegal constructions and improve property tax collection. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced these changes during a press conference. He highlighted the need for property owners to comply with tax rules. The AI system will help pinpoint unauthorized building expansions and will allow the BBMP to deliver property documents directly to residents' homes. Shivakumar mentioned that many property owners have constructed extra floors without proper permits and have not paid their fair share of taxes. Currently, there are about 7 lakh properties in Bengaluru that have not paid property tax. Shivakumar noted that 1 lakh of these properties are now included in the tax system, with efforts continuing to include the remaining properties. Recent legal changes now enable the BBMP to take action against illegal constructions. To ensure compliance, Shivakumar warned BBMP officials against colluding with property owners who violate regulations. He stated that any official found assisting illegal property owners would face suspension. Additionally, the BBMP will introduce a service for delivering property documents to residents starting in April. All property records have been digitized, and awareness programs will be set up in partnership with local MLAs. Regarding street vendors, the BBMP has received nearly 3,800 applications for pushcarts. The registration period has been extended to the end of April, but roadside shops will not be allowed. The BBMP aims to issue specially designed pushcarts to help reduce harassment of vendors. Lastly, Shivakumar mentioned that preparations for the upcoming BBMP elections are underway, contingent on the approval of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill by the Governor.
