Jim Johnson, a beloved WLS newsman known for his humor and warmth, died Friday at age 80 near Kansas City, Missouri. He had a remarkable career, spending nearly 50 years at WLS-AM. Colleagues describe him as adaptable and engaging, successfully transitioning through various roles in radio. Born in Chicago, Johnson attended the University of Illinois and began his career as a reporter during the tumultuous 1968 Democratic National Convention. He was recognized for his engaging storytelling and memorable gaffes, which became known as "Jim-isms." His family recalls him as a kind, supportive person who deeply cared for others. Johnson was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2019 but faced his condition with grace. He is survived by his wife, daughter, grandson, and sister.
