Beloeil pool opened with toxic discharge

Beloeil's whitewater pool was open on days in 2024 when abnormal concentrations of potentially toxic substances were discharged from the Northvolt site. The Ministry of Environment detected abnormal levels of suspended matter and metals linked to Northvolt on July 18, August 5, and August 15, 2024. Beloeil's pool remained open for swimming on these days, located a few kilometers downstream. The city did not request environmental data, and public health officials consider the risk from chemical contaminants low due to river dilution and limited exposure time. Northvolt stated its retention basin and treatment system now handle nearly 100% of site water.
