Barneveld man dies in police custody after restraint

A man from Oneida County has died while in the custody of state police after he tried to grab a trooper's gun. Matthew A. Brown, 30, was restrained following the incident on Monday night. Troopers responded to a call about erratic behavior at a home in Barneveld around 11:30 p.m. When they arrived, they attempted to talk with Brown. During this interaction, he lunged for a trooper's handgun. After being handcuffed, Brown became unresponsive while waiting for medical help. Troopers performed lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead shortly after. The State Attorney General's Office has been notified and will investigate the circumstances of his death, as is standard for incidents involving law enforcement.
