Bank of England governor walks out of IMF summit over Russia's presence
Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey joined a walkout of finance leaders at an IMF summit in Bangkok to protest Russia's participation, leaving when Russian finance minister Anton Siluanov addressed the group. Bailey was joined by counterparts from France, Germany, and several Scandinavian and Baltic countries. German Bundesbank president Joachim Nagel said nearly half of all delegates departed together, with a European diplomat stating the Ukraine war is "existential" and relations with Russia cannot be normalised. The walkout was acknowledged by IMF steering committee chair Mohammed al-Jadaan, who noted the meeting's statement was agreed by all members. The global economy showed resilience despite the war and Hormuz strait issues, though al-Jadaan warned of eroded buffers and risks from conflicts and trade tensions.
