The Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh has begun assigning unique identification numbers to wild elephants, starting with E-1, to track their movements. This initiative involves photographing the elephants' heads, ears, tails, and backs to create distinct IDs, aiding in accurate population counts and herd information across the reserve's nine zones. Twelve elephants have already been identified, with eight more in the process. The project, which started due to increased elephant activity since 2018, aims to improve monitoring and identification, with the team prioritizing safety during the photo-taking process.
