Automakers shift focus to in-house infotainment systems, challenging Apple and Google
Some automakers are moving away from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, opting to develop their own infotainment systems. Tesla and Rivian have never offered these systems, focusing instead on their unique software experiences. General Motors stopped installing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in December 2023, citing safety concerns and a desire for a tailored experience. However, GM still offers these systems in most of its models. Automakers are also looking to retain data and revenue by controlling in-car services. Surveys show that many consumers still prefer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in their vehicles.
