Australian Senate approves world-first social media ban for children under 16

The Australian Senate has passed a law banning social media accounts for children under 16, making it the first of its kind globally. The bill was approved with a vote of 34 to 19. Social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram could face fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars for failing to prevent young children from creating accounts. The House of Representatives had already approved the legislation with a vote of 102 to 13. The platforms will have one year to comply before penalties are enforced.
