Auckland Transport faces millions in unpaid transit fines

Auckland Transport (AT) is facing challenges in collecting unpaid fines. Over the past three years, they managed to collect only 68% of the fines from bus and transit lane violations. Mayor Wayne Brown has called for AT to take stronger action to recover these unpaid amounts. Queen Street is the worst area for fines, with a staggering $11 million issued in just one year. Despite issuing a total of $28.4 million in fines from the ten roads where the most violations occur, AT has only collected $15.6 million. To improve collection, AT plans to enhance enforcement measures. This includes installing new CCTV cameras and hiring an additional 50 staff members. Moving forward, the transport agency aims to improve its collection rates significantly.
