Arizona Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva dies at 77
Democratic U.S. Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva of Arizona has died at 77 from complications related to cancer treatment. He served 12 terms in Congress and was known for his work on environmental protection and as chair of the House Natural Resources Committee. Grijalva, who announced his cancer diagnosis in April 2023, had been absent from Congress while undergoing treatment. He had planned to retire rather than seek reelection in 2026. His congressional seat will remain vacant until a special election is held later this year. Grijalva was a prominent figure in progressive politics and focused on issues like water security and conservation. His death follows the recent passing of another Democratic House member, Rep. Sylvester Turner of Texas.
