Arctic: Melting glaciers reveal new islands, coastlines

express.co.uk

New research shows that shrinking Arctic glaciers revealed 35 new islands and 2,500 kilometers of coastline between 2000 and 2020. Scientists analyzed satellite images of over 1,700 glaciers in the Arctic region. The study found that 85% of marine-terminating glaciers retreated due to accelerated climate warming. Greenland accounted for around two-thirds of the new coastline, more than any other glacier. Fresh coastlines are prone to landslides, raising the risk of tsunamis, according to the study.
